Apart from regular visits from a carer, without any relatives living nearby Harry Clarke depends on his Live at Home befriender for any form of social interaction with another human being. He wonders how his life might be without the support from his local Live at Home scheme, provided by MHA.
Reflecting on the input from his befriender, Harry said: “What would I do without Live at Home? Well, if they didn’t take me shopping, I guess I might starve!
“I am housebound, and can’t leave my home without someone with me. So the befriender who sees me on Monday for a couple of hours, and the assistance with my weekly shop are both very good.
“I have no family nearby and not many people come to see me apart from my carers. If my befriender didn’t come, I should wash up my plates and go to sleep until teatime. But instead, he comes round, and we have a talk and a laugh.
“Live at Home makes it much better for me to carry on. They are arranging some outings on a barge soon, so I hope to go. It’s such a good scheme for people like me who live on their own.
“I have neighbours but I don’t see them; I’m not moaning, it’s just how it is. People have jobs and are busy. Without Live at Home you wouldn’t see anybody – but I do have Live at Home, and so I do.”
With your support, we can reduce loneliness in later life for even more isolated older people like Harry.
